“What if humans had to coexist with invasive species in a bio-centric future?”

INVASIVE FUTURES

Invasive Futures

Ecosystems reshaped by human-driven species movement

Invasive Alien Species (IAS) are transforming ecosystems through global human activity. This project imagines a future dominated by wetlands, where species like nutria redefine environmental balance.

Rethinking Control

From anthropocentric to ecocentric systems

The term “invasive species” has additional legitimacy among conservation biologists because it refers not only to a species’ impact on humans but on ecosystems and on non-human species. Some of these will become extinct or will be pressured into behavioural and perhaps genetic change as a result of the invasive species’ arrival.
Nonetheless, there is still a profound anthropocentrism lodged in the idea of the invasive species.

Co-Existence Facility

A responsive system of interaction and regulation

The proposed co-existence facility aims to provide a sustainable and harmonious environment for both Nutria and humans. Population control is achieved through sensory feedback systems, redefining control as a responsive ecological process. It incorporates several key areas to support ecological balance, which are waste management, sensory experiences, energy exchange, and a wetland area.

Lotus Flower As Inspiration

My design inspiration comes from the lotus flowers of lotus root, a native herbal species in China, which is heavily consumed by Nutria. The architecture is inspired by the shape of the lotus, aiming to break the prejudice against the "harm" of nutria. It is also a futuristic visualization of nutria and lotus flower co-evolution.
